The first time I heard of this modification was from Rachel on swedishbricks. She used her 245 to camp and carry large amounts of goodies, a thing 245s do best. Like anyone who is over 5' 2" she had problems with legroom when the rear seat was down (up? whatever) I'm right at 6' so I had a hard time moving my foot from the gas to the brakes when hauling stuff, not good or safe. This simple modification is quick, easy and makes no permanant changes to your brick. |
The pins that the seat pviots on is held with 2 slip on keepers. Hit the pin a good smack with a hammer on the tapered end (arrow). The keeper will fly off and the pin can be removed, repeat on the other side. Lift the seat bottom out and put in a safe place. |
Here you can see the pin after removing it, I tried to get a shot of the taper but the flash washed it out. On the other end you can see the remaining keeper. Having the keeper off of the end with the taper on it makes it easier to put in when you want the seat bottom back in. If you smack the wrong end it is not the end of the world, just be careful when you line up the holes. |
Get a harwood dowel ~ 1/2 thick, cut it to 11" |
Put the dowel in the hole in the back of the seat that used to line up with the pins on the seat bottom when it was folded up. You may have to trim a little to get seat level and if you want to get fancy you can put a cane tip on the end to protect the carpet. As you can see my wife uses this car to haul a couple of large Lab's so I'm not too worried about looks, just function.
Yes that front seat is all the way back, SWEET!!! |
